Of course, one of the worst possible interview answers is simply no. But there are a whole bunch of other frequently asked questions thatarentmuch better.These bad questionsarentoffensive. They are simply being asked at the wrong time. The interview process is a time for you to demonstrate your interest in the company and its culture. Its a time to show that youre a great team member and a hard worker. You want the company to buy into one basic premise youre the best person for the job andtheyvegot to have you.Like it or bedrngnis, its not a time to ask about the logistics of the job. In my years working as an executive recruiter,Iveseen far too many great candidates lose out by being unaware what not to say in an interview. Here are my top seven questions not to ask in an interviewHow much does the job pay?Although it can be incre dibly frustrating for job seekers, its simply not good form to ask about salary during the interview process. This tops the list of hiring manager pet peeves. It makes the interviewer think you care more about money than their fantastic company. Save the salary talk for the negotiations once you get the offer. In fact, if the interviewer asks what salary youre looking for, try to deflect the question. Youre in the strongest position to talk money after the offer has been extended.What benefits do you offer? What kind of heath coverage do you have? How many vacation days do I get?The same thing applies to all of ansicht questions. Benefits are a great thing to discuss during salary negotiations but not during the interview. In the negotiation period, everything is on the table.What are the hours?Employers want to hire people who do whatever needs to be done to get the job done. In todays world that often means being available 24/7. Asking about hours makes it appear you lack commitme nt. Maybe you simply have a legitimate concern like whether youll be able to pick up your kids but save these questions for later. Once the company wants to hire you, theyll find a way to work with you on things like that.Can I telecommute?Yikes, you havent even gotten the job yet and you want special treatment? Telecommuting or any other type of flexible schedule is something that you usually earn by working hard and making yourself invaluable. Youre also implying you have a difficult schedule or dont work well with others.What kind of support staff or help will I have?This question can come across as presumptuous and arrogant while also implying that you may not be up to the job without assistance. You can probably get the same information framed more positively by asking, How are your teams structured? or What is the structure of this department?When can I expect to be promoted?By asking this youre saying that youre not that interested in the position youre applying for but are a ctually eying a bigger role. Instead, emphasize youre looking for a long term role with future growth opportunities key word being future and ask about the companys history with internal promotions or what the career trajectory has been for people in this role.Am I allowed to freelance on the side?Thisisnta concern in the Accounting and Finance industries where I work but it is in some (usually creative) industries like graphic design and journalism. If this applies to you, dont ask the question during the interview. You want the company to feel certain that theyre getting your complete attention and your best work.There is a time and a place for all of these questions but its not during the interview. But while shes energized by her work, Jyotisana is careful not to let it follow her home so that she can enjoy quality time with her kids and shes grateful that Capital One makes it easy for her to balance her professional and personal life.How long have you been in your current role, and what were you doing previously?I have been with Capital One for over 5 years and in my current role for over 3 years. Before joining Capital One, I worked in various roles as a Software Developer and in Technical Program Management.Whats your pre-work morning routine like?I wake up around 530 a.m., have coffee, and then read, meditate and shower. At 630 I start planning breakfast and lunch for my kids. An hour later Im getting the kids ready, p acking their lunches, and then dropping them at school. I try to get to work around 8 a.m., an hour before my team comes in, so that I can catch up on my learning.Why do you think your company is a particularly great place to be a working mom?When my kids were younger, it was great to have the flexibility to work from home. Especially with twins, when one gets sick, the other one just follows, so I needed to be home but mucksmuschenstill be able to work. I allocate time, use my team, and delegate to be efficient.What are you especially good at as a mom? What about at work?Im good at coaching my kids, helping them in their studies, and setting high expectations that gives them something to strive for. I follow the same principles at work. Whats your No. 1 tip for new moms who are navigating the delicate balance of working and mothering? Dont feel guilty about leaving your kid to go to work. You have made a decision to go back to work, so dont keep revisiting that decision. When you are at work, focus on work, but its OK to start saying no if your work is invading your family time.
